No sleep this week, yet I am still awake now
So this week has been crazy. Cole came home from daycare on Tuesday feeling a little warm. He had about 100.1 temp but got his immunizations on Monday so we assumed this was a result of that. Wednesday, Robert drops Cole off at daycare at 2:30 and I pick him up about 4:30. He felt really warm to me so I get him home and take his temp. 102.5, great looks like the little guy is sick.
I checked his bg level and of course it's in the 300s. I put cotton balls in his diaper and wait for him to pee so that I can check for ketones. A couple hours pass and I change his diaper. I take the cotton balls and squeeze them into a cup and put the test strip in... ugh moderate ketones. Ok, that's not too bad. I hand Cole some water. He sucks down 6 8oz classes of water in a 3 hour period. I check for ketones again. Still moderate. BG level is 415. Time to call the after hours doctor.
Doctor says it's time to start checking his bg level every 2 hours and check for ketones. If ketones are present Cole will need a shot if his bg level is above 200. This continues all night long. So 10:00pm check, 12:00am check, 2:00am check, 4:00am check and then 6:00am check and wake up for work. Oh fun times. Of course I am working a summer camp this week. What would normally be a fun week turns out to be a week that completely drains me of any energy.
I come home Thursday after work and Robert tells me that Cole has been good all day. Temperature has been around 99 to 100 all day, bg levels have been normal and only a trace of ketones left. GREAT!! Maybe we can all sleep tonight. Of course I go pick up Cole and say he feels really hot. I take his temp and it's 102.7. It's time for some medicine so I am hoping that will help. 2 hours go by and he feels even warmer than before... 103.7. I tell Robert that he should have taken him to the doctor, but of course being a typical man he never listens : )
I check for ketones and of course it's a large amount. Awesome. Time to push water down Cole. Cole goes to sleep and we do his 40 billion checks during the night. Much better Thursday night.
Friday morning wake up and Cole does not have a fever. I tell Robert he needs to stay home again and take him to the doctor if the fever comes back and off to work I go.
Robert calls me at work and tells me Cole's fever is back up to 101 and he is taking him in. He calls after the appointment and tells me Cole has herpesvagina... "I am sorry he has what" I say. Robert repeats himself, "herpesvagina". I say "Robert, I don't think you heard the doctor right". He tells me the doctor wrote it down because he didn't know how to pronounce it.
I hang up and have a good laugh with my co workers about Cole's herpervagina. I get home and ask Robert for the note where the doctor wrote down what virus Cole has. I unfold the piece of paper to see "herpangina"... well hell, Robert was pretty close. Herpangina, what sort of virus name is that. Sounds like my 1 year old has an STD. Guess it's some sort of virus like Hand, Mouth and Foot, but only gets sores in the mouth.
Good times. As long as this stupid little virus (I am sure he got from daycare) hangs around, Cole's BG levels will continue to go crazy and we will continue trying to get rid of the ketones in his urine.
Tonight Cole was up to the high 300s before bed with moderate ketones. I checked him again at 10:30pm and he was down to 74. Seriously this is ridiculous, now I have to give him juice because his target BG level for bedtime is 200. 74 is too low and he might drop dangerously low in his sleep. Can't believe I had to carb him up before bed. I am sure that will help us get rid of the ketones (just kidding). Ugh, I hate you diabetes!!!!
So I passed out with Cole in between his 8:30 check and his 10:30pm check, so now my body feels like it's rested. Great, I should be sleeping but instead I am on the computer typing away. Pretty soon it will be time for his next check. :)
