4 year Diaversary

Today marks 4 years since Cole was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  It's been a great and crazy 4 years. We still have our ups and downs but we are making it. Each year on Cole's diaversary we do something special with him.  We have gone to Gattiland (a pizza place with games), we have just done a family dinner with a special desert, and one year we took him to see Florida Georgia Line (his favorite band). Today we are going to celebrate yet again.  We made a music video that we are sharing with our social media friends.  We have a cousin's birthday party we are attending during the day and then we will go to a special dinner of Cole's choice.  So far he says, Texas Roadhouse, but it's early that could change.  Then in a couple of days we will take him to see his favorite band, Florida Georgia Line, once more.  

To us his diaversary isn't about celebrating diabetes, because really who in the hell would want to celebrate diabetes.  We are celebrating Cole.  Cole has stayed strong and brave during the past 4 years and still has a lifetime to go with this damn disease.  He puts up with so much, from finger pokes, to site changes, to sensor changes, to waiting to eat till his numbers are in range, to shoving food down him when he's not hungry because he's low, to feeling like crap when his numbers aren't in range, to having crazy dreams if his numbers are too high at bedtime.  So we will always celebrate Cole's diaversary.  We celebrate Cole's positive outlook on life, his bubbly, friendly and silly personality. We also celebrate to give Cole something positive to look forward to in regards to his diabetes.  Most everything about diabetes is pretty negative (minus having to eat candy because he's low), so why not give him something positive to look forward too.  Because he has type 1 diabetes, he gets an extra day to celebrate him.

So, Happy Diaversary Cole!  We love you!

I can't believe it's been 5 years. I can't believe he is 6 now. 5 years ago today, I woke up and made Cole breakfast, which he refused to eat. 5 years ago I gave him 2 breathing treatments at home which didn't seem to help him breath any easier. 5 years ago I took him to the doctor. 5 years ago I learned that his blood sugar was super high (482 at the doctor's office). 5 years ago I learned that his ketone levels had sky rocketed and he was in DKA. 5 years ago I held h is limp body in my arms as they poked him numerous times in attempts to get 2 IVs started in him. 5 years ago we received the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. 5 years ago I learned that I will forever have to give my little baby shots (or use an insulin pump) for him to stay alive. 5 years ago I learned that his poor little fingers will be poked 5-10 times every day. 5 years ago I learned that I will have to count the carbs of everything he eats. 5 years ago I learned that I will have to worry about his

Facebook - Tear Jerker

So the other day my parents shared a video on facebook from the Saving Luke facebook page.  Saving Luke is another Type 1 diabetic child that has a diabetic alert dog.  His mother runs the FB page and made a video about her son and their experience to raise awareness about Type 1.  Well I see the video shared on my parents page so I decided to play it.  Let me set the scene up for you... I am laying in bed with the computer typing out donation request for our benefit to raise funds for Cole's diabetic alert dog.  I take a break to look at FB and see my parents post.  I click on the video and start watching.... She starts by showing a picture of her son and saying that he came close to dying when he was 2.  Well that hits close to home.  Cole was 13 months when he was transported to the ER by ambulance. She talks about how Type 1 there is no cure and he will always have it.  How he gets finger pokes and injections all the time.  Then it moves on to without insulin he will die.

Cole's Story

Let’s start by sharing little man’s story… Cole had been getting several ear infections along with congestion that caused breathing issues. A care plan for Cole included breathing treatments on a nebulizer when needed. On Friday March 15, 2013 we took Cole to his doctor thinking that he might have yet again another ear infection (we were one ear infection away from tubes). On Friday his doctor said his ears were fine but to give him some breathing treatments to help his airways, thinking it was just some sort of congestion issue. Monday, March 18 rolled around… the dreaded day. Cole was given his lunch and he barely touched it. The night before he barely ate his meal as well. For those that know Cole, we knew something was terribly wrong. The big guy eats A LOT for a 13 month old. A bit later his breathing became heavier and it appeared he was struggling some.
