Daycare Drama

So when we found out Cole was diabetic we called his current daycare and asked if they would be able to accommodate his special needs.  They told us they would not.  Well I guess that is not exactly what they said… What they said was that if we could get a doctor to come to daycare and train them then they would.  We asked our doctors which of course said they cannot do that.  So the search began for a new daycare.  Luckily (and I can say that now), I had lost my job so I was at home when Cole was diagnosed… anyway, luckily I was at home so we had some time to find a new daycare.  We checked several places and they were either willing to do the shots and glucose checks and were really dirty daycares or they were nice daycares but had A LOT of hesitation about doing the shots.

After talking with Robert, we decided we did not want to go to a place that had hesitations about giving the injections.  It’s already worrisome enough relying on someone else to calculate Cole’s insulin amount correctly and give his injection, but throwing hesitation on top of that was not something we were willing to deal with.

Luckily a friend of ours who is also Type 1 happened to have his child in a daycare nearby.  He spoke with his daycare and they told him they would be willing to take Cole.  Not only that but they had an employee that was also Type 1 and was very familiar with what needed to be done.

AWESOME, sign us up!!  So we went up and talked to the director.  She informed us that either herself or the employee that was diabetic would take care of Cole.  The first week Robert and I went up and trained the employees on what to do and what to watch for.  Not to mention I wrote up a several page instruction manual for them, which goes with Cole every day.

The first 2 weeks I was determined I made a mistake and needed to figure out a way to afford to stay at home or get a part time job or something.  Daycare was feeding him crackers after being told not too (luckily only a couple and they aren’t that high in carbs).  Then there was the juice incident.  Another teacher from a different room stepped in during snack time and gave Cole a juice thinking that she was supposed to.  The normal teacher came in and took the juice away and told the director.  The director then called and informed me right away.  So they made a mistake, but I was just glad that they cared enough to call and see what they needed to do now.

Over time I have started to become ok with the idea of Cole being in daycare.  I have confidence in the director and her abilities to take care of Cole…. Now let’s move on to Thursday. ….

I was working the evening shift, so Robert was picking Cole up from daycare.  I received a text message from Robert asking me to call him (don’t ask why he just doesn’t call, I don’t understand it either).  Anyway, I call Robert and he informs me that the director is leaving.  UGH!!!

While I am happy for the director and her new career opportunity I selfishly wish she was staying.  She has been training a new lady to take her spot and the employee that is diabetic has actually been doing Cole’s injections all week.

So here’s to hoping they take good care of Cole like the old director did….she will be missed.
