Dental Work and Scary Lows

Yesterday Cole had to have some dental work done.  It required him to be partially sedated.  Nothing to eat or drink after midnight until after his appointment which was scheduled for 7:45am.  Sounds easy enough, right? Try throwing Type 1 Diabetes into the mix.  This requires a lot more thought and a lot less sleep.  For those that don't know, if Cole's blood sugar drops below 70 we have to treat by giving juice, candy, fruit (something that will get his blood sugar up).  If we do not get his blood sugar up, he could have a seizure, go unconscious, or even die.   So what does that mean when he has procedures done that requires no food or drink?  Well it can be a bit tricky.  Usually we try to run his numbers a bit higher than we would.  We can do this by reducing his basal rate (the amount of insulin he gets continuously) or we can reduce his bolus for his dinner meal (insulin he gets per carb consumed).  So Sunday nigh...

Disney with Type 1 Diabetes

Let me start by saying we love Disney.  We have traveled to Disney World 3 times in the past 4 years and have our 4 th  trip scheduled for this summer.  We have also visited Disneyland once.   These are only the times we have been with Cole since his diagnoses 4 years ago.     Cole was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 13 months old.  He is now 5 and can't wait to go to Disney World again.  The first time we went to Disney World he was 2 and it was kind of  intimidating .  We were unsure how to deal with diabetes and how diabetes was doing to deal with Disney.    Let me start off by saying we drive  everywhere.  From our house to Disney World it takes about 16 ½ hours to get there.  We normally take our time and sight see on the way down.  That being said a car ride is tough for Cole's blood sugars.  We have learned that setting a temp basal when we start our journey, incre...

3 Years Ago Today

Three years ago today, I was waiting at the doctor to find out what was going on with my son.  Three years ago today, I took my first ambulance ride, sitting next to my 13 month old son.  Three years ago today, I watched my baby get poked multiple times while the PICU staff tried to get 2 IV’s started in him.  Three years ago today, my child laid limp in my arms while I tried to provide him comfort. Three years ago today, my child was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Cole turned 4 last month and we celebrated 4 years of life with Cole.  This month is Cole’s 3 year diversary (it’s been 3 years since his Type 1 diagnoses).  While we do not celebrate having diabetes, we are celebrating that diabetes hasn’t slowed him down.  So what’s in store tonight for his celebration?  Well a night at Gattiland of course and his favorite dessert (a chocolate mousse cake from Costco).  That’s right pizza and chocolate cake for our little diabetic.  Diabeti...
