5 Year Diaversary
I can't believe it's been 5 years. I can't believe he is 6 now. 5 years ago today, I woke up and made Cole breakfast, which he refused to eat. 5 years ago I gave him 2 breathing treatments at home which didn't seem to help him breath any easier. 5 years ago I took him to the doctor. 5 years ago I learned that his blood sugar was super high (482 at the doctor's office). 5 years ago I learned that his ketone levels had sky rocketed and he was in DKA. 5 years ago I held his limp body in my arms as they poked him numerous times in attempts to get 2 IVs started in him. 5 years ago we received the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. 5 years ago I learned that I will forever have to give my little baby shots (or use an insulin pump) for him to stay alive. 5 years ago I learned that his poor little fingers will be poked 5-10 times every day. 5 years ago I learned that I will have to count the carbs of everything he eats. 5 years ago I learned that I will have to worry about his blood sugars being too high causing permanent damage to his organs. 5 years ago I learned that if I give him too much insulin and he drops too low he could die. 5 years ago I became my son's pancreas. 5 years ago I learned just exactly how strong and brave Cole was.
So now that his 5 year diversary is upon us we celebrate. Some may find it weird to celebrate the day that he was diagnosed with this life changing disease but it's not a celebration of Type 1. It's a day to celebrate life, a life that could have been lost if his doctor hadn't been persistent to find the cause of Cole's problems that day. To celebrate the joy of everyday that has been given to us. To celebrate Cole. It's a day for him to pick whatever he wants to do. It's a day for him to look forward to because of diabetes. There is enough bad about diabetes, so why not make one day worth having diabetes. So today we shall celebrate Cole! Today we post our ever so embarrassing diabetes video just for something fun to do. Please excuse the singing as we aren't singers, we are just having fun.#type1life #type1diabetes #diabetesmusicparody #5years #diaversary#family #t1d #weneedacure #notsingers #type1warrior #type1strong#type1kid

2 months ago I found out my now 11 month old has type 1 diabetes her doctor sent us to the er because of a pound in a half weight loss in 3 weeks time all I originally took her in for was a cold .after a long day of extensive testing and being on oxygen we found out her blood sugar was 589 and she was in DKA within two hours we would of lost her after 5 days in the picu we were sent home with tons of needles and supplies that we will forever need in order to keep her alive it's by far the hardest thing I've ever had to do,poke a sweet little happy baby endles times a day.we just started a Dexcom device yesterday meaning less pokes I hope it helps her pore little fingers need a break.
ReplyDeleteSorry to her about your daughter. It's so hard especially when they are that young. It took us 6 months before we got a Dexcom. No one told us that there was such thing out there. Dexcom was a game changer. You will love it.... well at least we did : )
