First Trip with the big D

Our first trip with the big D… and I don’t mean divorce or Dallas :  )
We recently took our first trip since Cole has been diagnosed with diabetes.  It went pretty well, besides the packing.  Not only did I have to make sure I packed everyone’s clothes, towels, sheets, blankets, pillows , water toys, life jacket, etc…. I had to make sure I packed the insulin bottles, the syringes, alcohol wipes, lancets, glucose meter, his frio bags to keep the insulin cool, test strips, cotton balls, ketones strips (as I type that I realize I forgot the ketone strips, thankfully we did not need them).  Oh the joys of packing.  Oh and not to mention his carb free snacks.  A trip isn’t complete without lunch meat and cheese.
I was so concerned with making sure I brought all his diabetes stuff, I forgot his swim diapers and his toothbrush and toothpaste… but I guess that’s what Walmart is for.
So we make our first stop on our road trip to Rockport.  We decided to stop and eat.  After dinner I start calculating Cole’s carbs and his correction bolus and Robert starts to pull out the syringe and his insulin.  Robert sets the insulin on the table and reaches for the alcohol wipes (I think), when next thing I see his Cole’s insulin bottle rolling off the table.  HOLY CRAP is all I can think.  And then Robert catches it.  Oh thank God.  That would not have been a good start to the trip.
The rest of the trip went well minus Cole being in the 500s both mornings.  The first morning we fed him pancakes (which he has only had a bite of them before).  Robert decided to let him taste syrup, so he got a couple of his bites dipped in a bit of syrup, which of course he loved.  We checked him before we hit the beach.  I think it was 525.  Wow those pancakes and syrup really shot him up high.  It was shortly after giving him the insulin so we decided it just hadn’t kicked in yet.  An hour later and he was down in the 300s.
Next morning, we decided it was the syrup and gave him pancakes with no syrup.  Then we drove to Port A.  512 I think was his reading that morning.  Wow, guess it’s not the syrup, must be the pancakes.  No more pancakes for Cole.  Cole eats waffles at home… well Eggos, I guess you can call those waffles : )  Eggos don’t affect him at all.
We were worried that playing in the water and sun were going to drop him low, guess we found the cure for that… Pancakes and Syrup!
Poor guy got more finger pokes than normal since we were worried about how his body would react to being more active outdoors.  We look forward to bringing Lexi with us to the beach next year!  Ugh, after I say that I realize I will then have to worry about packing dog water, dog food, dog bowls and whatever else the dog will require.  I think I need a bigger car!
