Daycare babies... Sick all the time
I am pretty sure Robert and Cole have come up with an evil
plan that every time Robert goes out of town Cole will get sick. I would have liked to think that Cole would
not play along with what I am sure is Robert’s evil plan, but the past few times
it appears that Cole likes his dad’s plan.
I can picture then both doing the evil laugh together.
So Thursday, Robert left for Dallas and Friday Cole came
down with a high fever. I was checking
him every 3 hours and giving him corrections.
Somehow even though Cole was in the 300s with his blood glucose level we
managed to keep the ketones levels to trace or small. Thank GOD!
That is until tonight. Of course
they go up to large amounts. I was
trying to pass them off as moderate but I walked around showing my mom and dad
the pee strip and they both said it looked more like large. UGH!!
I texted Robert to let him know again how happy I was that
he was out of town. I then called the after-hours
diabetic line to speak to the on call doctor (normal protocol for large ketone
reading while they are sick). Here are
the instructions I received:
-
Check Cole every 3 hours
-
If his bg level is above 200 give him ½ unit of
insulin while he still has large ketones
-
If his bg level is below 200 but he still has
large ketones feed him 15g of carbs/or juice and give him ½ unit of insulin
My thought is I have to give him Tylenol every 4 hours for
his fever…. So I am thinking I will check him every 4 hours. It would be kind of mean for me to wake the
poor kid up every 3 hours, let him try to fall back to sleep only to be woken
up again in an hour.
Last time he was sick it was every 2 hours I was to check
him but give him a correction (insulin shot) only after 3 hours. I am glad they realized the every 2 hour check
is a bit pointless if I can’t do anything about his highs. I get if he is running low.
So my sleep deprived self (thanks again Robert/explorer
post) went to check Cole’s urine this morning for ketones. I took the cotton balls from his diaper and squeezed
the urine into his test cup. I then
washed my hands and picked up the cup and dumped in the sink and rinsed it out….
UGH seriously! I hadn’t even tested it yet!!
I had to try to get more urine out of the cotton balls. Thankfully I was able to get just enough out
to test.
So now it’s 9:00pm and Cole is asleep. I have to check his urine, his bg (blood
glucose) level, his temperature and give him more medicine at 11:30pm. I keep telling myself I should go to sleep
because I am exhausted but then I think by the time I fall asleep it will be
time to wake up to check Cole. Seems a
bit pointless.
Well maybe a little nap wouldn’t be a bad idea…..
