Crazy Low Blood Sugar While Waiting for Food

Recently we traveled to San Antonio, Texas during Spring Break.  We started off our journey by trying to find a parking spot in all the craziness.  We found a parking garage that was a short walk to the River Walk.  We parked and I decided Cole's pump site seemed bad.  He kept creeping higher and higher according to Dexcom.  I decided to change his site before we started our walk to the River Walk.  After changing it I checked his finger and realized his Dexcom had been really off.  I checked to see if it would give a correction because he was still 200 (just not the 280 the dexcom had said). The meter said I had exactly enough insulin on board to get him down to our target blood glucose. So I did not administer any extra insulin.

We began our short walk and arrived on the River Walk.  The lines for eating were long as you can imagine it was Spring Break.  We walked up and down the River Walk a few minutes before deciding to head back to where we started, to eat at Dick's (a place known for being a bunch of Dicks).

On our way back, Cole's blood sugar started dropping.  I gave him two large smarties in efforts to stop the drop.  He continued to drop so I gave him another large smartie (altogether 9 carbs).  We arrived at Dick's and were told it would be a 30 minute wait.  We agreed and gave our name and phone number.  I figured every place would have a wait.

While waiting Cole's blood sugar kept dropping.  I ended up giving him a juice (the only one I had with me, the others where in the car).  He leveled off and in fact started shooting straight up.  About 40 minutes into our wait (mind you it was suppose to be 30 minutes), Cole had leveled off and was coming back down.  My mother went to ask the host how much longer it would be.  She explained we had been told 30 minutes and now it was over 45 minutes.  She informed them about Cole's diabetes and that his blood sugar was coming down and we needed an idea of how much longer it would be before we got seated.  The host said he would go check.

A few minutes later the host returned to inform us that they would not be liable for any medical issues that we might have. That they can not guarantee how much longer it would be and that even after we were seated they couldn't tell us how much longer it would be till we got our food.  Explaining that even if we got a table it could be 40 minutes once we sit down to get our meal.  My mom stated she just needed to know how much longer till we got our table.  He then told her another 30 minutes.  We then said some not so nice words and the gentleman at the restaurant next door, Lone Star Cafe, had over heard the incident.  We told us to head up stairs and we would be seated immediately.  They not only sat us immediately but we got our food pretty quick and got 2 juice boxes (as Cole's blood sugar quickly plummeted again during all of this).

So Dick's Last Resort on the San Antonio River Walk, you truly live up to your name.  You are in fact a bunch of dicks!!  While it seemed like a fun place to go and their humor was right up our alley, I will never go there.  Shame on ya'll for not putting your dick attitude aside to help a 6 year old child with Type 1 Diabetes (we just wanted to know how much longer till we were seated).  Thank you to Lone Star Cafe for stepping in and getting us a table right away and getting us our food very quickly.

Lessen learned on my part, bring more juice.  I had thought 1 juice and a package of smarties would be enough since I checked his blood sugar before leaving the car and it was 200.  I never imagined it would drop that quick (yes I also had glucagon on me).
