Meeting Lexi

We got to drive down to Jasper, TX where Drey’s Alert Dogs is located yesterday.  We made the 4 ½ hour drive down there and got there in time to check into the hotel.  We decided since Cole had been stuck in the car for 4 ½ hours we would let him go to the pool for a few minutes.  So we took Cole to the swimming pool which was nice and warm.  It had a little rock fountain which Cole found amusing.  He loved to go over and splash on it.  For once we were not able to drag Cole out of the pool.  Guessing since it was more like bath water than freezing cold pool water.
Once inside we checked his BG level.  73… seriously.  The child is always high and now before bed he is 73.  (He is supposed to be much higher for bed time).  Robert starts freaking out that if we give him the whole 1.5 units of levemir (long lasting insulin) that we will definitely kill him in his sleep.  This was only going to be our second night of 1.5 units.  We had been giving 1 unit.  Robert didn’t want to give him anything.  I told him we had too and that we would just watch him (which should be easy to do in a hotel while we shared a bed).  I compromised though and said we could just do 1 unit.  I then told Robert I had some nilla wafer s that we could give him and should boost him up some.  Robert seemed ok with that.  I tried to tell him that Cole always shoots up high by 2am anyway.
Well Cole ate his snack and we gave him 1 unit.  10:00pm we checked him again and he had gone up to 250.  Great, who is always, right… me that’s who.  Now I know Cole will be needing a shot at the 2am check.  So, I of course being the woman I am,  tell Robert that I was right and he should have listened to me.
2am check Cole is 315.  Shot time.  Ugh poor baby.  And for some reason he has been peeing sooooo much again.  Like what he was doing before he went into the hospital.  So every night at 2am we change him trying to avoid accidents.
Well of course waking him up and giving him a shot along with changing his diaper and being in a hotel and sleeping with us, Cole now thinks it’s play time.  OMG the child would not go back to sleep.  3:55 am I finally feel him pass out in my arms.  Then of course Robert becomes concerned.  So he checks him again.  Back down to 70 something, can’t recall.  But then it was decided he’s dropping low to fast.  Apple juice time.
Poor kid… just fell asleep.  He was pissed to say the least when Robert woke him up trying to force him to drink juice.  I told Robert only make him drink a little or we are going to shoot him up high again.  So he drinks about half and we all finally fall asleep about 4:30am.
On to the fun part.  We woke up in the morning and got dressed and headed over to meet Lexi.  Cole does not have much exposure with dogs so he was pretty scared.  Poor guy would cry and shake when Lexi came close.  When Lexi was in her cage, Cole was very curious about her and would go over to her cage and look at her.  He did warm up a little and would throw her dog toy so that she could fetch it.
Drey’s offered for us to come down a weekend and they would let us take Lexi for the weekend so that Cole and her could bond.  Great idea and we will definitely take them up on the offer but probably wait till Lexi is a little older.
After such a rough night we are very excited to be getting closer to getting Lexi.  February will be here before we know it.

  1. OMG, I am so sorry that everyone is having to go through this...especially Cole! Will keep all of you in my prayers. You two are wonderful parents!! And Cole is such a trooper! I'm looking forward to the day Lexi becomes a part of your family. What a blessing that dogs can be trained to help in such a way. Love you!!
