Dropping Low
I have finally gone back to day shift and luckily was able
to be stationed at a place that had a daycare which allows me to give Cole his
insulin and check on his blood sugar.
This has been a great benefit. We
have been able to catch a few lows that if he had been at daycare without me we
would have not caught them so soon and no telling how low he would have
dropped.
The other day at daycare the teacher came and got me. They told me that Cole had been playing and
having fun then all of a sudden he started to cry. They told me they tried everything to get
Cole happy again but he would not smile.
They stated he laid on the ground and began to roll back and forth. She thought something was not right. I went down and checked on him. He was lying in the arms of one of the
teachers whimpering. I checked his blood
sugar and it was 56. It was low but the
other night he was 36 and was acting just fine.
I gave him a juice and held him.
While waiting for 15 minutes to pass so I could recheck him, Cole just
went limp in my arms. His eyes started
to roll back. I tried to wake him up as
I was texting Robert asking him what I should do. Cole would not wake up no matter how I moved
him or what I said to him. Robert told
me to stand him up and make him wake up.
I placed Cole down on the ground and held him up so that his feet were
touching the ground. He opened his eyes
for a second, then they rolled back again and he collapsed in my arms.
I held him not knowing if he was completely exhausted or if
something was really wrong. I checked
his blood sugar and it had jumped up to 135.
Great, I thought, maybe he’s just tired.
15 minutes go by and he’s still out of it. I recheck his blood sugar and it’s dropped
again to 86. What in the world is going
on….. so frustrated. I don’t know what I
am supposed to do as the ladies in daycare just look at me helplessly.
Robert arrives to daycare and we check Cole for
ketones. No ketones… and no movement
from Cole either. He laid there
completely still and was not effected by me changing his diaper.
I decided I should take him to the doctor. Not only was this behavior kind of freaking
me out but he had recently been stung by several fire ants and even though it
had been a week they seemed to be getting worse and not better. And guess what, if you are diabetic you are
supposed to be more worried about fire ant bites becoming infected.
So off to the doctor we went. The doctor decided that he was having an
allergic reaction to something, possibly the ant bites. Benadryl for the next 48 hours. The doctor said if that didn’t work then she
would need to give him a steroid and guess what happens when a diabetic takes a
steroid… that’s right it jacks with their glucose levels. UGH stupid diabetes.
On the plus side, it appears that most of Cole’s bites have
gotten better. Hopefully the rest will
heal soon.
